Frisco cyclists are excited following news that Frisco is among ‘Bicycle Friendly’ cities.
The League of American Bicyclists recognized Frisco with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community (BFCSM) award. Frisco joins seven other communities in Texas and 372 communities from across the country achieving the ‘Bicycle Friendly’ designation. The BFC award recognizes cities’ investments in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies.
Frisco’s Bicycle Advisory Committee includes residents, representing the city’s cycling community; a representative from the Parks and Recreation Board; representatives from the Frisco Independent School District; and city staff from the Police, Engineering (Traffic Division) and Parks and Recreation departments.
The League of American Bicyclists, which awards the BFC designation, gave Frisco its highest marks for bicycle friendly laws and ordinances; public education outreach, which includes programs at Frisco Fire Safety Town; and cycling events, such as the MS150 ‘starting line’ in Frisco and yearlong races and activities hosted by the Frisco Superdrome, a velodrome track located at the northeast corner of Collin College-Preston Ridge Campus, 9700 Wade Blvd.
To date, Frisco’s hike and bike trails – which include sidewalks, soft paths, and trails along creeks – total more than 90 miles throughout the city. More than seven of those miles make up Frisco’s mountain bike trail, located on the future park site of Northwest Community Park. North of Lone Star High School, Northwest Community Park sits at the intersection of Glory View and Teel Parkway. Later this month, Frisco will open its pump track and skills course which offers three different riding lines from beginner to expert level. The pump track opening celebration will be held May 28, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
