Collin College has been named to the 2015 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The honor roll recognizes institutions of higher education which support service learning and volunteerism programs and raise the visibility of campus community partnerships.
The college was named to the honor roll in the General Community Service, Economic Opportunity and Education categories. The General Community Service category recognizes institutions which work to improve the quality of life of off-campus community residents, particularly low-income individuals. The Education category recognizes institutions which commit to improving educational outcomes for children and youth in pre-kindergarten through undergraduate education. The Economic Opportunity category recognizes service programs that build economic independence, increase family stability, and create more sustainable and resilient communities.
Collin College has been named to the honor roll five times and was a finalist for the Presidential Award in 2013, the highest federal recognition an institution can receive for its commitment to community, service-learning and civic engagement. The program is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).
Dr. Terry Hockenbrough, director of the Collin College Center for Scholarly and Civic Engagement, said service learning and volunteerism are ways Collin College gives back.
“Our students, faculty and partners continue to collaborate on robust academically-based service projects,” Dr. Hockenbrough said. “As a result of this collaboration, our community continues to benefit. We are proud of their commitment and the impact they are having across Collin County. Service Learning is indicative of our college’s core values and will remain a powerful way of teaching at Collin College.”
